Alexithymia is the inability to be aware of your internal emotional state. Alexithymia is not a disease nor an disorder, it’s just an slight inability to identify and express emotions. KINDS OF ALEXITHYMIA
It is believed that there are two main types of alexithymia with a variety of severity for each: primary& secondary, but its further classifies into four kinds.
- Primary or trait alexithymia
- Secondary or state alexithymia
- Cognitive alexithymia
- Affective alexithymia
PRIMARY ALEXITHYMIA – means that is prevalent in multiple environments and even with therapy it does not change. this type of alexithymia is also known as lifelong alexithymia means it can’t be cured easily.
STATE ALEXITHYMIA- means it can disappear after the stressful situation is removed. this is most often seen following the successful treatments. It is also known as the temporary kind of alexithymia.
COGNITIVE ALEXITHYMIA- means a person is not able to express emotions in childhood or not having emotions explained to them. A person does not know what to do with emotions.
AFFECTIVE ALEXITHYMIA- a person with affective alexithymia has trouble expressing or displaying emotions . They seem to have nonreactions or not know how to respond and react.
