BJP candidate Saurabh Thapliyal has created a historical record by winning in Dehradun, the largest municipal corporation in the state. Saurabh won by 1,05,295 votes.
BJP candidate Saurabh Thapliyal got 241778 votes while Congress’ Virendra Pokhriyal had to be satisfied with 136483 votes. In this way, Saurabh has registered the biggest victory in the history of Dehradun Municipal Corporation. Elections for Dehradun Mayor have been held five times so far. Out of which BJP has won the seat continuously for four times.

The largest and oldest municipal corporation of the state is Dehradun Municipal Corporation. In the year 1998, the Uttar Pradesh government declared Dehradun as a municipal corporation. After the formation of Uttarakhand state in 2000, Dehradun’s status as a municipal corporation was abolished. In the year 2003, the Uttarakhand government again declared Dehradun as a municipal corporation.After which elections have been held five times till now. For the first time, Manorama Sharma Dobriyal of Congress was elected mayor. BJP has been in power for four times. Vinod Chamoli won twice, Sunil Uniyal once and now Saurabh Thapliyal has won. There are 100 wards in Dehradun Municipal Corporation.
